Cost of Living in Cape Coral

Today I'm going to tell you about the Cost of Living in Cape Coral, Florida.

Welcome, I'm Sherry Puchacz with REMAX Realty Team here in Cape Coral Florida. If you are new here, consider subscribing to my YouTube channel because I make videos and talk about a lot of really cool stuff related to Cape Coral and if you're gonna be living here, I'm sure you want to know about it.

So let’s get started because what you really want to know is, "Tell me about the cost of living in Cape Coral Florida.” How will my quality of life compare to what I have now?"  Well I'm going to tell you that compared to most major metropolitan areas Cape Coral is relatively less expensive.

So here's a really great website https://www.nerdwallet.com/cost-of-living-calculator that I found when I was Googling that gives you a cost-of-living analysis. You can type in the city where you live now and the salary that you currently make. And it will tell you what kind of salary that equates to in Cape Coral when we compare the cost of living. So for instance, you might make $60,000 now but if you moved to Cape Coral you might only need to make $53,000 in order to have the same quality of life because the cost of living is less.

Now conversely, if you live in an area that's very low cost right now and you type in the salary that you're going to make in Cape Coral or Ft Myers you might find that it's going to be more expensive to live here. Isn't that something that you'd rather know now before you accept that job offer? Perhaps that will give you more leverage to negotiate that they give you a better relocation package. You can say, "Listen, I'm gonna be making less money if I move there so I need you to pay for all of my moving expenses." Will it work? Who knows? But it's worth a shot, right? You never know if you don't ask.

But in general, the cost of living in Cape Coral is on par with other cities our size. For example, my husband and I decided to relocate here about five years ago from New England, which everybody knows is expensive. My parents lived in Orlando and every time we came to visit we fell a little more in love with Florida until one day we decided... you know what? When we retire from our current jobs we're just moving here ourselves. My husband was offered a job in North Ft Myers and the salary he was offered here was a little bit less (and it wasn't much less) than what he had been making in New Hampshire. In the end we were fine because the property taxes here are a lot lower.

Now Cape Coral is a city. It's not a big city, it's a medium city. I would compare it to something like Sioux Falls, South Dakota or Akron, Ohio or maybe Aurora, Illinois or Grand Rapids, Michigan or Worcester, Massachusetts. Our total population is about 200,000. But it's really a geographically spread out, about 105 square miles.

We've got homes that are on gulf access canals, we've got homes that are on fresh water canals, we've got homes that are on city water and sewer and we have homes that have newer well and septic systems. We, for the most part, have one story homes that are concrete block construction…some have pools and most have screened in lanai’s (fancy word for porch).

One of the most important benefits of living in Florida is that we do not have state income tax..zero..zilch…cha ching. We do not have heating bills, but we do have air conditioning bills. The cost of groceries and gas is really about the same as most medium cities in the US. We do not have to plow or shovel our driveways, but we do have to mow grass all year long.

So I hope that this was a good synopsis of the cost of living in Cape Coral. It really is an affordable place to live.
